Amazon Fresh Supermarket is now open in Broomall

MARPLE — The 40,000-square foot Amazon Fresh supermarket featuring Just Walk Out technology is now open (7 a.m.-10 p.m.) at the Broomall Commons Shopping Center at 2924 Springfield Rd. in Broomall.

Officials announced the opening in a press release Thursday morning.

It is the second Amazon Fresh store in Pennsylvania, they have another store in Warrington, Bucks County.

The Just Walk out technology determines “who took what” from the store when a shopper takes something off the shelf, it’s added to their virtual cart. When the shopper puts the item back on the shelf, it comes out of their virtual cart. After they leave the store, they’re charged for the items they left the store through an Amazon account.

Customers shopping with Just Walk Out technology can use a credit or debit card, Amazon One, or the In-Store QR code in the Amazon app to shop. They also accept cash, SNAP/EBT.

The Just Walk Out option is made possible by a combination of computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning, which automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. Traditional checkout lanes are also available for all shoppers.

Steve Kelly, spokesperson for Amazon, said the store will run a little bit like a traditional grocery store but will also have the Just Walk Out technology, which gives customers the option to skip the checkout line.

“The folks at the store will have the customer service area, there will be (employees) stocking shelves and there will be cashiers too,” he said. “We’ll also have the people who pick and pack customer orders, there will be order ahead.”

In addition to all national brands local brands including La Colombe, Unique Pretzels, and Troegs Brewery; and Amazon-exclusive brands like Aplenty and Fresh, including Fresh Plant-Based products.

To celebrate the store’s grand opening, Amazon will have weekend long events  including: Giveaways, special discounts, free samples of Aplenty snacks, Amazon Kitchen smoothies, mac and cheese, Allegro coffee, a scavenger hunt for children throughout the store and exclusive discounts for Prime members, who can save up to 20% on select everyday essentials in-store

The new store manager is Mike Liberatore.

“We’re pretty sure the Amazon Fresh store is going to have a robust and solid relationship with folks in the Broomall area,” Kelly said.

The company is still looking to fill jobs at the new store. They offer a starting wage of $15/hour and interested candidates can learn more about employment opportunities at Amazon Fresh and apply at
