Achieving 51 billion export target will not be difficult: Commerce Minister

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said Bangladesh’s export sector is active even in the situation of World Cupid-19. On the contrary, the export sector has turned around. Exporters and all those involved in exports need to work sincerely for further growth of exports. Achieving this stated goal will not be a difficult task if we continue our concerted efforts.

He said this while addressing a meeting on setting and announcing export targets for the virtual 2021-2022 fiscal year from the conference room of the Commerce Ministry at the Secretariat.

The country’s export target for the 2021-2022 fiscal year has been set at 51 billion US dollars. All national and international issues have been taken into consideration while setting this target. Of this, 43.50 billion is expected to be exported and সেবা 6.50 billion in services. This time the target has been set at 12.36 percent export growth. The Commerce Minister also hopes that this target can be achieved if the trend of exporting at the same rate continues.

He said all necessary assistance including incentives are being given to our export sector on the special initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The government has taken special initiatives to increase the number of export products and expand the market. So the opportunity to increase our exports has come. Exporters and all those involved in exports need to work sincerely to increase exports.

The minister said the present business-friendly government is working sincerely to increase the country’s exports. The government has undertaken projects to make several sectors efficient in exporting goods. Besides readymade garments, there is huge potential for export of light engineering, ICT, leather and leather goods, plastics and agricultural products. The Ministry of Commerce is implementing a project in collaboration with the World Bank to strengthen these sectors. It is expected that the exports of these sectors will increase at a significant rate. In addition, efforts are being made to enter into trade agreements with various countries, such as PTAs or FTAs, to boost the country’s exports. Besides, commercial counselors appointed in different countries are also working to increase exports.

Earlier last year, the export target was 48 billion US dollars. Of this, the export target was ৪ 41 billion and the service sector target was ৭ 6 billion. পণ্য 38.6 billion in goods and ৬ 8.63 billion in services. In other words, 94.56 percent of the target has been achieved.
